Self-Help for Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal part of being human. It’s your brain’s way of trying to keep you safe by warning you about possible danger.

In life-threatening situations, this internal alarm system can help you survive. But anxiety doesn’t always get it right. Sometimes it sounds the alarm even when there’s no real threat.

You might notice anxiety showing up as:

  • A racing heart, tight chest, or feeling on edge
  • Constant “what if” thoughts about things that haven’t happened
  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that feel overwhelming
  • Trouble staying present, focused, or calm — even when you logically know you're okay

When is anxiety a problem?

Anxiety itself isn't harmful. But it becomes a problem when it starts to interfere with the life you want to live.

If you find yourself constantly avoiding, overthinking, or feeling stuck in fear, it might be time to look more closely.

Instead of asking, “Do I have anxiety?” consider asking:

  • How is anxiety limiting me?
  • What would I be doing if anxiety weren’t in the way?
  • What has anxiety talked me out of?
